The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has implemented a capability called "LinkOut" that allows users of NCBI Entrez (who might for example be looking at an article in PubMed) to link to related information in resources external to the NCBI.
The DISCO LinkOut Broker is a Web application that collects Web links related to NCBI Entrez objects (PubMed, Gene, Protein, etc.) from NIF resources that participate in DISCO's LinkOut capability, and sends information about those links to NCBI for use by the Entrez LinkOut feature. NCBI users can then follow those links for additional information about Entrez object that they are viewing. In addition, the DISCO LinkOut Broker provides search and gateway capabilities based on the collected information.
Examples
The following examples demonstrate LinkOut information in use by NCBI and the DISCO LinkOut broker. In these examples:
- The "Entrez" links show example NCBI pages. On those pages, scroll down and expand the "LinkOut - more resources" link to reveal several groups of links. In the "Miscellaneous:" group, there are links provided by the NIF. Each of those links leads to a Web page within a NIF resource containing information related to the NCBI page.
- The "Gateway" links show a DISCO LinkOut tool that shows all NIF LinkOut links for an NCBI object in a page that is independent of Entrez, and which could therefore be linked to from other NIF resources. (This approach has the potential in the future to extend the use of NIF LinkOut to allow LinkOut from NIF resources, not just from Entrez.)
